I picked up a high deductible insurance policy recently. From what I’ve been reading and hearing from other Crossfitters, this is starting to be the norm if you Crossfit and buy your own health insurance. I mean, what would I need health insurance for? I don’t get sick. I’ve got all of my shots. I’m fit and healthy. The dangers I face are trauma (falling from rings), infectious disease (ebola?), and other catastrophic incidents. Hence the ‘catastrophic’ health coverage as high deductible plans are often referred to.
Anyway, every policy year I get a 100% covered preventative health screening with no deductible. I set one up last week and went in for testing. I’ve got a really crap family history (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol), so they decided to run almost every screening that I was covered for (I think they skipped cervical cancer and the mammogram). All in all, they did a physical exam, EKG, bloodwork (glucose and lipid panel), and urine test.
I got the results in the mail and I decided to post them. Seeing as how I follow the diet and exercise advice that I dole out, I thought it was only fair to share my numbers.
Physical exam: Unremarkable. The doctor’s exact words: “You’re as healthy as a horse”.
EKG: Normal. From the doc: “I’m not used to seeing this day-to-day. You’re fine.”
Bloodwork (normal values in parentheses):
Glucose: 95 (70-99)
Total cholesterol: 199 (<200)
HDL (good cholesterol): 57 (>40)
LDL (bad cholesterol): 130 (<159)
Triglycerides: 60 (<150)
Doctor’s comments: “Bloodwork is fine – continue healthy diet and exercise”
So I’ve gotten the approval from the medical establishment. Oddly enough, if I told him what my ‘healthy’ diet and exercise regimen involved, he might be horrified. I mean I follow a high fat diet and do extreme exercise. The is not what the FDA or medical establishment recommends.
In a future installment I’m going to contrast how I eat versus the traditional FDA food pyramid, and examine how conventional nutritional wisdom might not be the best.
