Hi guys,
I’ve been wondering what words of wisdom I could post on our website. Then Pete reminded me that I’m always fu**ing injured! I am going to rehab for a month starting today until the end of May, (I know it’s a little over a month by the way).
I’ve been reading a lot about nutrition and rehabing your tired, beaten up, kicked in body so thought, “Hey, I could try that”.
I find my nature to be my best friend and worst enemy all in one. It’s my best friend because I’m very competitive, hard working, a perfectionist and I will do whatever I need to do 100%. It becomes my worst enemy because I am stubborn as hell. I don’t listen well when people have told me in the past that I probably shouldn’t be bench pressing with broken ribs, or doing push-presses with a fractured collar bone, or deadlifting to a 1 rep max with herniated discs in my back.
Turns out this was all very good advice.
I am tired of having multiple injuries that have been a constant problem because of not allowing things to heal properly.
What scared me into doing this experiment was that I started to think about the “what if’s”. What if I get to a point where I am in constant pain with my back and can’t walk (let alone work out)? Let me tell you, the first time I pulled my back out, no fun was to be had. You take for granted all of the small things you do day to day that become near impossible. I am an outrageously independent person and the idea of being crippled and reliant on someone to do everything for me is my own personal hell.
Today I felt great because I hadn’t done any crazy shit over the weekend thanks to my son who made me stay at home and just be a mum, (that’s British for mom in case you were wondering).
I am an avid yoga fan and I firmly believe that yoga can fix everything (especially coupled with red wine!!) I spent the whole of last week on the yoga diet, meaning the only working out I could do was yoga. So I would put some cypress hill on the ipod and went to work. I cannot tell you how much less pain I have been in this week from doing that. I highly recommend yoga to help out your flexibility, and if I can do some yoga with any of you please let me know. I can tell you also that it will help your lifts immensely.
Today I decided to do a little lifting and it was Back Squat day. I’m not sure that this was the best starting point, however, I kept the weight light and the reps between 5 & 7. Also I didn’t want to embarrass Peter who was lifting beside me. Not to sound too confident but the student has overtaken the master if you know what I mean…………
I am doing at least 15 mins of yoga at the start and finish of my workout so as not to give the muscle an opportunity to tighten up. I STRONGLY ADVISE MAKING THIS A HABIT.
As far as nutrition my biggest problem is that I don’t eat enough. I am pretty good at staying on track with paleo, except I do eat sweet potatoes mid-day after my workout. Right now it is 5.03pm and I had 2 eggs with red pepper and celery for breakfast at 8am. Then I had a grapefruit at 10am, then a sweet potato and a large salad at 1pm.
I am going to keep posting my nutrition as I refine it and let you know how it is affecting my recovery and ability during workouts.
I will be posting on the website every day. I promise they will not all be this long, just giving some background info.
Cheers,
Hana
